Dr Marek Bartelik

Marek Bartelik is a Polish-born, New York-based art critic, art historian and poet. Bartelik taught at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York and has been a Visit Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), MIT and Yale. He is the author of numerous books, among them: On the Polishness of Contemporary Polish Art (2008), or GDR/DDR: Contemporary German Painting from Portuguese Collections (2008). His book, Early Polish Modern Art, was a groundbreaking work that introduced the Polish inter-war avant-garde to the English speaking audience, for which he received the Wacław Lednicki Award In the Humanities from the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America.Bartelik curated museum shows of, among other artists, Mark Rothko, Adja Yunkers and Anna Bella Geiger and served as President of AICA-USA (2008) and the 15th President of AICA International (International Association of Art Critics), which was founded by UNESCO in 1949 with nearly 5000 critics as members from over 70 countries around the world. He currently resides in Aegina, Greece, where he works on a fantasy book, in which Aegina and his dachshund, Toby, are treated as two “cosms”: macro and micro.

 

 

 

Dr David Anfam

David Anfam is Managing Director of Art Exploration Consultancy Ltd, London, and Senior Consulting Curator at the Clyfford Still Museum, Denver. He has been the Luce Visiting Professor in American Art at Brandeis University and was Commissioning Editor for Fine Art at Phaidon Press for almost twenty years.  His diverse books include Abstract Expressionism (1990; 2015); Mark Rothko: The Works on Canvas – Catalogue Raisonné (2019) and Anish Kapoor (2009). Since 1990, Anfam has contributed essays to more than seventy exhibition catalogues, ranging in subject from David Smith and Pier Paolo Calzolari to Max Beckmann and Wayne Thiebaud. His exhibition Abstract Expressionism (Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2016–17) was the largest European survey of its kind ever held. Most recently, Anfam curated Lynda Benglis: In the Realm of the Senses at the Museum of Cycladic Art (NEON, Athens, 2019–20).

Michel Gauthier 

Michel Gauthier has been the curator at the Centre Pompidou in Paris since 2010, where he deals with post-war painting and sculpture and recently curated exhibitions devoted to Sheila Hicks, Victor Vasarely, Martin Barré and Farid Belkahia. He has curated two exhibitions devoted to Stefan Gierowski: Deep Impact.  Stefan Gierowski and European avant-gardes in the 60s (Stefan Gierowski Foundation, Warsaw, 2019) and Il senso dello spazio, la scelta della luce (Dep Art Gallery, Milan, 2022). In the exhibition Cosmic Modernities which he curated last summer at the Vasarely Foundation (Aix-en-Provence), a 1967 painting by Stefan Gierowski was included. He is the author of numerous studies and some twenty books, among them Promesses du zéro (2009), Le temps des intermèdes (2017) and publications devoted to Gerhard Richter, Mohamed Melehi, Claude Rutault. He taught art history at Sorbonne University from 2007 to 2019.

 

 

 

Natalia Gierowska 

Natalia Gierowska is a Political Scientist and Journalist who has been published in several academic journals such as Springer, specialising in politics of the Middle East, Public Policy and Refugee Law. Gierowska is also the European Art Correspondant at The Brooklyn Rail, where she regularly contributes exhibition reviews. Together with her cousin, Łukasz Dybalski, she proudly represents the Stefan Gierowski Foundation.

 

 

 

Dr Pepe Karmel 

Art historian Pepe Karmel teaches in the Department of Art History at New York University. Karmel is the author of two books, Picasso and the Invention of Cubism (2003) and Abstract Art: A Global History (2020), and he has written widely on modern and contemporary art for museum catalogues, as well as the New York Times, Art in America, the Brooklyn Rail, and other publications. He has curated or co-curated several exhibitions, including Robert Morris: Felt Works (Grey Art Gallery, New York, 1989), Jackson Pollock (MoMA, New York, 1998), and Dialogues with Picasso (Museo Picasso Málaga, 2020). Karmel is also an accomplished translator of French poetry and fiction, the first to translate Nobel laureate Patrick Modiano.

 

 

 

Dr Joachim Pissarro 

Joachim Pissarro is an art historian, theoretician, curator, educator, and director of the Hunter College Galleries and Bershad Professor of Art History at Hunter College of the City University of New York. He has held positions at the Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum, MoMa, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Royal Academy of London, and the Yale University Art Gallery. Notable exhibitions Pissarro curated include Pioneering Modern Painting: Cézanne and Pissarro 1865–1885 (2005) and Out of Time: A Contemporary View (2006, with Eva Respini), which have toured internationally. Pissarro has served as the Editorial Director of Wildenstein Publications and is also an author of numerous books- his latest title, Wild Art, has been co-authored with art critic David Carrier and was published by Phaidon Press.

 

 

 

About the venue: Casa degli Atellani

The Leonardo Da Vinci Vineyard, also known as Casa degli Atellani, is a Renaissance masterpiece situated at the heart of Milan. In 1488, the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Maria Sforza gave it as a gift to Leonardo da Vinci, while he was working on painting the Last Supper in the nearby Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. 

In 1921, the palazzo has been restored by architect Piero Portaluppi, most famous for his realisation of Villa Necchi Campiglio, an icon of Milanese rationalism and set for the movie I am Love (2009) that starred Tilda Swinton.
